MEDIA RELEASE: RANA BOKHARI OUTLINES PLATFORM PRIORITIES

Winnipeg, MB, July 13, 2022 – Today, Rana Bokhari outlined her platform priorities as the campaign for Winnipeg’s mayor continues.

The mayoral candidate has three main pillars to her campaign: Community, Sustainability and Prosperity.

“As I’ve been speaking with Winnipeggers this summer, I’ve been hearing a lot about connection and our goals for the future,” says Rana.

“People want a mayor with vision who looks beyond their time, for generations to come.”

Based on talking to Winnipeggers, Rana has identified priorities below and will release ideas and solutions on each of them as the campaign continues:

Community:

  • Our recreation spaces need to be community-focused, accessible and affordable for families
  • We need green spaces where families can gather – safely – to build memories
  • Emergency services personnel are overwhelmed with mental health calls but we don’t have the resources to connect people to help
  • The city isn’t built to support traditional ways of living, especially for multigenerational families
  • We need welcoming safe spaces to help all newcomers to Winnipeg get oriented, connected, and on their feet
  • We need to collaborate with First Nations communities to ensure members coming to Winnipeg have a safe space to land

Sustainability:

  • The City should lead the way in conversion to biofuels and clean energy
  • Transit needs to be affordable, responsive, and reliable to the needs of community; and commit to the Transit Master Plan
  • We need to stop dumping sewage into Lake Winnipeg; our responsibilities don’t end at the perimeter
  • Winnipeggers need a sustainable and active transportation plan that is implemented quickly
  • Our infrastructure is crumbling and we need sustainable solutions so we don’t just fill potholes and replace roofs, but build for the future
  • The City requires integrated planning that reflects the interconnection of policy and operations across the entire city

Prosperity:

  • Small businesses are the heart of our communities and they need our support; right now they are just surviving
  • Urban sprawl is getting out of hand; but we need housing solutions for all Winnipeggers and their families
  • Access to services is fragmented and inconsistent – especially for historically marginalized populations; we need more coordination and connection among service providers and we need to fill gaps in service
  • Housing needs to be affordable and close to the resources that Winnipeggers need
  • New development needs to meet the needs of communities first – providing safe and vibrant spaces that attract people – and keep them here
