Oct. 24, 2022 – For immediate release:
Candidate Rana Bokhari says as Mayor, she will require all city project reports to acknowledge and fully articulate the impact projects will have on the city’s most vulnerable communities.
This will help ensure that councilors understand the full implications any given project will have on Winnipeggers.
“If you look at most reports from city administrators, there is a section that describes the economic impact of different projects, but there is no specific section for how it will impact people,” says Rana.
“Council needs to take a broader approach to projects, planning, and programming to understand exactly how they will affect our citizens, not just the budget.”
To that end, Rana would direct the city’s Chief Administrative Officer to ensure reports made to council look at the effect decisions will have on those who are disabled, refugees, LGTBQ+, Indigenous, homeless, seniors, women, and more.
“So, when an administrator authors a report – add a section and require it to be filled out,” says Rana.
“It’s a small change, but a powerful one that will have a ripple effect.”
The change will mean administrators and councilors will have to consult with communities and experts, leading to increased dialogue and better information for everyone.
“It’s strange to me that the impact a project will have on people is not a required thought process,” says Rana.
