Oct. 6, 2022 – For immediate release:
Mayoral Candidate Rana Bokhari says she will work towards dropping the price of a monthly transit pass to $20 over the next four years.
The pledge comes as part of a package of promises around Winnipeg Transit designed to increase ridership without increasing costs for Winnipeggers.
“All the candidates have made pledges around transit, recognizing it’s a vital economic system and climate-change combater for the city,” says Rana.
“As the pandemic has taken its toll and inflation rises, and the problems caused by climate change only worsen, I want to encourage Winnipeggers to take transit more often; while making it more attractive to do so.”
To help achieve that end, Rana says she will implement the following initiatives:
- Reduce the cost of a monthly bus pass to $20 over the next four years
- Replace buses that age out of service with electric buses and build the infrastructure to sustain them
- Work with outside municipalities to implement paid park-and-rides for people living outside of the city who work in Winnipeg
- More ‘blue line’ strategies on major routes to better serve suburbs
- Support the current Transit Master Plan but work to find funding to speed up its implementation
- Increase frequency on routes where most needed
- Make the last leg of BRT – currently scheduled to run down Portage Avenue – the first leg of LRT
Rana says the costs to achieve her plan will be covered by increased ridership and funding from other levels of government.
